Tonight (Thursday 7 December 2023), BBC Two broadcasts an episode of the series Disappeared: Mexico’s Missing 43!

Season 1 Episode 1 Episode Summary

The documentary takes us back to September 26, 2014, a day that would change the lives of many forever. On this fateful day, a group of students embarked on their way to a protest in Mexico City. However, their peaceful journey took a horrific turn when they were violently attacked. Shockingly, 43 young men were forcefully taken away by municipal police, and since that day, they have vanished without a trace.

Initially, federal investigators pointed fingers at corrupt local police and a local drug cartel as responsible for the attacks. But as weeks and months passed, civil unrest grew, fueled by the increasing suspicions of the missing boys’ parents regarding the official investigation.

In this documentary, viewers will have the opportunity to hear the firsthand accounts of survivors, the families of the missing, and exclusive interviews with key figures, including Tomás Zerón De Lucio, the fugitive former head of the Mexican Criminal Investigation Agency (CIA), and Omar Gómez Trejo, the exiled former special prosecutor.
