After the Vietnam War, Vietnam became entangled in a conflict against Pol Pot, the leader of the Khmer Rouge in Cambodia. This military campaign culminated in 1979 when Vietnamese forces managed to overthrow Pol Pot’s regime.
The Khmer Rouge, under Pol Pot’s leadership from 1975 to 1979, was responsible for the Cambodian genocide, during which an estimated 1.5 to 2 million people died. The Vietnamese invasion of Cambodia, while ultimately leading to the end of Pol Pot’s brutal regime, also drew international condemnation and led to a protracted conflict that drained Vietnamese resources and isolated the country diplomatically. This intervention was a significant event in Southeast Asian history, impacting the regional balance of power and Vietnam’s own post-war recovery.
