American playwright and screenwriter Thomas Lanier Williams III used the professional name Tennessee Williams. Because of his southern accent and his father’s Tennessee heritage, college friends gave him the nickname “Tennessee, bonding him to the South.
In 1939, Tennessee Williams resided at 722 Toulouse Street in New Orleans’ French Quarter, where he wrote a short story The Angel in the Alcove and also served as the backdrop for his play Vieux Carré from 1977. The structure is currently included in The Historic New Orleans Collection.
