Final Jeopardy Answer

The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Washington Irving

Final Jeopardy Explanation

Washington Irving was the first to call New York City Gotham, in his February 13, 1807, letter in the ”Salmagundi Papers”, which was a periodical that lampooned New York culture and politics.

Irving wrote “Oh! Gotham, Gotham! most enlightened of cities! – how does my heart swell with delight when I be-hold your sapient inhabitants lavishing their attention with such wonderful discernment!“.

The name “Gotham” was adopted by the author from the English village in Nottinghamshire. Old Anglo-Saxon proverbs describe a town called Gotham or Gottam, which means “Goat’s Town” in English. Perhaps because the goat was regarded as a foolish animal in the Middle Ages, Gotham is depicted in folklore as the settlement of simple-minded fools.
