Emperor Diocletian travelled to Nicomedia in 303 AD, which served as both the eastern capital and a significant administrative hub for the Roman Empire. The purpose of this trip was to commemorate 20 years of his rule. Nicomedia was situated close to the city of Izmit in what is now modern-day Turkey. As his primary residence and the hub of his government, the city had a special place in Diocletian’s heart.
