Final Jeopardy Answer

The Final Jeopardy Answer is: William H. Seward

Final Jeopardy Explanation

The quote from today’s Final Jeopardy originates from a letter penned on August 7 1867 by U.S. Secretary of State William H. Seward, addressed to General Lovell Rousseau. Seward instructed Rousseau, “On arriving at Sitka, the principal town in the ceded territory, you will receive from the Russian Commissioner the formal transfer of that territory.”

Seward was instrumental in negotiating the purchase of Alaska from Russia. The correspondence with Rousseau, who was designated to oversee the Alaska purchase transaction, pertains to the formal handover of the territory from Russia to the United States, which took place in Sitka, Alaska. This landmark deal, known as “Seward’s Folly” or “Seward’s Icebox” by detractors, added over 600,000 square miles of new territory to the United States. Despite initial criticism, the purchase proved to be of significant strategic and economic benefit to the country in the long run due to its rich natural resources, including petroleum, minerals, and fish, as well as its strategic geopolitical position. The day of the transfer is celebrated annually in Alaska as Alaska Day.
