In honor of the American victory in the Battle of New Orleans on January 8, 1815, the Eighth was a federal holiday in the United States from 1828 until 1861 held on January 8 each year.

After the War of 1812, The Eighth was frequently observed throughout the Southern United States. Following Andrew Jackson’s election as president in 1828, January 8 was declared a federal holiday, and it remained one until the commencement of the Civil War.
