Today’s Final Jeopardy
Until a 1903 secession, this country’s contiguous territory spanned 2 continents
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Colombia
Final Jeopardy Explanation
Colombia spanned both North America and South America until Panama split from the country in its succession on November 3, 1903. It was formalised by the establishment of the Republic of Panama and was officially recognised by the United States on November 13, 1903.
Asserting its independence from Colombia, Panama issued a declaration with the backing of the American government. The Panama Canal Company, a French-American business that aimed to build a waterway across the Panama Isthmus to link the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, supported a Panamanian faction that was responsible for orchestrating the revolution. The Hay-Herrán Treaty, which was signed in 1903 with Colombia, gave the United States access to the Panama Isthmus in exchange for monetary compensation.
