The first person to portray the title character in J. M. Barrie’s Peter Pan was English actress Nina Boucicault at the Duke of York’s Theatre in the production Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up which premiered on December 27, 1904. Boucicault’s performance started the tradition of having a woman play Peter Pan.

She was born in London to actors Agnes Robertson and Dion Boucicault Sr. Her brothers were actors Aubrey and Dion Boucicault Jr (who directed the premiere of Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up), and her sister was actress Eva Boucicault.
