Today’s Final Jeopardy
The name of this pungent gaseous compound is ultimately derived from the top god of the ancient Egyptians
Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Ammonia
Final Jeopardy Explanation
Ammonia (NH3) is a colourless gas with a pungent odour.
The name Amon or Amun, which means “hidden” in Ancient Egyptian, was given to the Theban god of air and invisibility. Amon’s cult became extremely popular in Ancient Egypt, as was associated with the top god of the Ancient Egyptians, the creator-sun god Ra.
Sal ammoniacus was the name given to the ammonium chloride by the Romans when they first dug it up from the ground close to the temple. From the Ancient Greek word ammniakos, which means “related to Amon,” comes the Latin adverb ammoniacus.
Ammonia was not referred to in English until the turn of the nineteenth century, although the word first appeared in scientific Latin in 1782. Swedish chemist Torbern came up with the phrase.
