Final Jeopardy Explanation – Friday, April 28 2023
On April 18, 1975, the bicentennial of the American Revolution’s eve, President Gerald Ford went to Old North Church and ignited a third lantern to commemorate the nation’s third century.
The infamous “One if by land, two if by sea” signal is said to have been sent from the Old North Church on April 18, 1775, preceding the American Revolutionary War engagements of Lexington and Concord.
In a nationally televised speech, President Ford said “The Declaration of Independence has won the minds, it has won the hearts of this world beyond the dreams of any revolutionary who has ever lived. The two lanterns of Old North Church have fired a torch of freedom that has been carried to the ends of the world.” and “Let us pray here in the Old North Church tonight that those who follow 100 years or 200 years from now may look back at us and say: We were a society which combined reason with liberty and hope with freedom. May it be said above all: We kept the faith, freedom flourished, liberty lived. These are the abiding principles of our past and the greatest promise of our future.”
