The first edition of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz by L. Frank Baum was published by the George M. Hill Company in Chicago on May 17, 1900. It is known for its pale green dust jacket stamped in a vivid jewel tone of green.

The plot follows Dorothy, a young farm girl, on her adventures in the magical Land of Oz after she and her faithful dog, Toto, are carried away from their Kansas home by a tornado.

On her journey across Oz, Dorothy meets a variety of characters, including the Scarecrow, who seeks a brain, the Tin Woodman, who seeks a heart, and the Cowardly Lion, who seeks courage. They each believe that the Wizard can help them, so they set out to find him in the Emerald City. They face numerous obstacles along the way, including confrontations with the Wicked Witch of the West.
