Aaron Burr was the Vice President of the United States under President Thomas Jefferson from 1801 to 1805. One of the Vice President’s constitutional roles is to serve as the President of the Senate, and it was in this capacity that Burr presided over the chamber for those four years.
As the Senate’s presiding officer, he stepped down in 1805. Upon his departure, he characterized the Senate chamber as “A Sanctuary A Citadel of Law, Of Order.”
