Final Jeopardy Answer
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Mariana Islands
Final Jeopardy Explanation
The Pacific Island chain named for a Spanish Queen is the Mariana Islands, named after Queen Mariana of Austria. These islands were notably used as the starting point for the famous explorations conducted by the bathyscaphe Trieste in 1960 and the Deepsea Challenger submersible in 2012. In 1960, the Trieste, piloted by Jacques Piccard and Don Walsh, made a historic descent into the Challenger Deep, the deepest part of the Mariana Trench and the world’s oceans. Then in 2012, film director James Cameron made a solo journey to the Challenger Deep in the Deepsea Challenger, repeating the deep-sea exploration to gather scientific data, specimens, and visuals never before captured at such depths. These missions underscored the Mariana Trench’s significance in oceanographic research and deep-sea exploration.
