A 1918 article titled “Do not shoot at” these said hunters were interfering with the U.S. signal corps’ training of them
Today’s Final Jeopardy Answer – Tuesday, October 17 2023
The Final Jeopardy Answer is: Pigeons
Final Jeopardy Explanation – Tuesday, October 17 2023
The 1918 piece in The National Humane Review, titled “Do Not Shoot At Pigeons,” issued a warning to hunters to cease firing at these birds, as it interfered with their military training by the U.S. Signal Corps. During the First World War, these carrier pigeons were indispensable for conveying messages through hazardous war zones when other forms of communication were either impractical or too perilous. Their training was crucial for the successful execution of various military tasks.
The article pointed out that the Signal Corps encountered difficulties in preparing these birds for their roles when hunters mistakenly targeted them. This not only complicated the training regimen but also jeopardized the effectiveness of the pigeons in real-world military scenarios. Thus, the article called on hunters to stop shooting these birds to ensure they could be properly trained and utilized for national security purposes.
These homing pigeons had long been an integral part of military communication systems, especially during World War I. Gifted with innate homing skills, these birds were adept at delivering crucial messages over large distances and under perilous conditions.
